DRIVE FOR RORY
Tuesday 20 August
On 24 April it was my privilege to meet Rory at the Cotswolds Health & Fitness Club in Bourton on the Water. Area 22 has committed to providing support to Rory through the charity CALM, Children Achieving Lifelong Movement.
Let me tell you about Rory. Rory had a stroke at the age of 4. Since leaving hospital the NHS has been unable to provide the regular support he needs. This support is focused on twice weekly physio sessions under the specialist guidance of skilled therapists and are vital for his recovery and ongoing rehabilitation.
It is essential for Rory’s future mobility and wellbeing that he keeps moving, which is why these sessions, financed by CALM, are such an important part of Rory’s week. Here he builds his strength, gains independence and the freedom to do the things that other children take for granted.
But Rory is not alone in this endeavour, others also seek, through CALM, to gain their independence, not in a hospital environment, but in a gym. One parent commented that CALM’s biggest strength is its culture; the banter, motivation, fun, inclusiveness, challenge, self-belief, and hope are really special. This enables the children with lifelong movement disorders, known as “trainees”, to achieve their full potential.
Rory is a petrolhead. Now 5 years of age he is very excited to learn about cars and Aston Martin in particular. And so, this week, it was my opportunity to start what may be a lifelong passion and interest in the marque. Here we see the joy in his eyes and he pulls and pushes “things” to see what they do…. a boy’s delight.
On Tuesday 20 August we are dedicating our monthly event to Rory. Here you will have the opportunity to contribute to the support that Rory needs to gain his independence. He is a lovely lad and he deserves your support. I will update you regularly on this event, on CALM, and of course on Rory.
