It was with some trepidation that we opened the gates on Sunday to Portway Classics & BBQ 2016 in the ‘back yard’, as our American friends recently visiting called it. Even though last year’s event was a roaring success, there was still the underlying fear of the ‘what ifs’. What if nobody turns up? What if we run out of cake? What if the sun doesn’t shine?

The photo is of the Vantage that took part in the British GT endurance race at Silverstone on Sunday 7th May. It was driven by Ross Gunn and Andrew Howard who is the boss of Beechdean Ice-cream, a company headquartered in Area 10. The drivers kindly autographed photos of their car and handed out tubs of ice-cream. They finished the 3-hour race in 4th position, and I think would have been on the podium if there had not been a safety car incident towards the end.

25 Area 10 Astons attended amongst the reported total of just over 500. 21 of our cars were parked together but later arrivals had to park separately due to the damp conditions. As usual, the time flew by, but 10 Mascots remembered to convene for the lunchtime photoshoot - actually there were only nine mascots as one turned out to be a real dog! The winning mascot, judged by Pat Fallon with no guidance whatsoever, was Dave Steptoe’s bear called Aston.

AGM and Quiz at The Bugle Horn
A great evening, superbly organised by last year’s quiz winners, the Fell Family. Perfect venue, with segregated parking and excellent food. There were seven quiz teams who had to answer seven rounds of questions including two picture rounds. One of the pictures was of an Aston Martin DP215 which sadly I got wrong, especially as the Ten Trophy we were all trying to win was a model of DP215. Congratulations go to the winners of the trophy, the team of Ian & Roseanne Affleck and Rob & Lorraine Smith (again)!
For the AGM section, I briefly summarised the Area 10 accounts which are showing a healthy surplus, and then held the elections for Rep and Assistant Rep. I was re-elected as Rep unopposed, and I am delighted to say that Liz Constance was unanimously elected as Assistant Rep.

On 8 March, we attended the Sporting and Historic Car Engineers near Banbury. Amongst the array of “sporting & historic cars” there was a DB4 GT, a DB4 GT Zagato and a DBR9. They will be supporting cars at Goodwood and at The Le Mans Classic so do look out for them.
On 9 March we had our monthly meeting at the Spade Oak. We had 38 Members and guests, including three new members.

On 22 March Graham Maidlow arranged good weather for our mid-week visit to the Museum of Berkshire Aviation in Woodley, near Reading and so a good complement of 11 Astons lined up in our reserved car park. For a small museum it had a great number of interesting exhibits from tiny models to a full-size Handley Page Dart Herald that Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, piloted on a 2-month tour of South America in 1962 (behind the Area 10 Members in the photo).

Ian writes:
April 22 saw 20 Astons from Area 19 descend on a very sunny Crieff.

We were very kindly invited to Stephen Leckie’s cars and coffee day. We had the opportunity to view Stephen's collection and workshops whilst also viewing the other attending car clubs.
The Astons were all parked together which made for a great display, with many attendees stopping to take photographs.

Entry forms have been sent away for Glamis show with 22 Astons entered this year.

Do remember to get your entry in for Netherby hall if you wish to attend this year.

Unfortunately the ‘show and shine’ planned for Rolls Royce Edinburgh had to be cancelled at short time.

A busy month to report on with two main car shows and an invitation to an event from Aston Martin Edinburgh.

Mid-June saw the return to the annual show at Thirlstane castle and we had a dozen Astons on display ranging from a rare DB6 Mk 2 Volante to a modern DBS. There were other Astons dotted around the other displays including a V8 Volante in the Sporting Bears area giving rides to raise money for charity.
Many of us attended the DB12 launch evening at the Prestonfield house hotel in Edinburgh on 16 June.
The front of the house & car park looked amazing with an array of Astons parked up.
We were well fed and watered and enjoyed seeing and hearing about the new DB12 as well as learning more about Aston Martin suppliers Vaughtons and Bridge of Weir leather.

On 9 July, 20 Astons were in attendance at Glamis castle for the Scottish Transport Extravaganza. This is always a popular event for Area19 and once again the weather was kind. Great to see such an array of Astons on display

The list of upcoming events has been emailed out to Area 19 members and they are also on the Area webpage. There are still some more to be added, including our AGM which we will be arranging soon.

If you wish to attend Thirlstane please let Peter know, as he is coordinating the club entry.

If you wish to attend Glamis please let Ian know Ian know as he is coordinating the club entry for that event.

By the time this is published we will have been at Stephen Leckie’s Cars and Coffee event at Crieff. To get an idea of the eclectic collection of cars that Stephen has check out the May 2023 copy of Classic Cars magazine with a seven-page article.

After the success of last year's show and shine at the Rolls Royce Edinburgh showroom we are looking forward to holding the event again this year. This year we will be joined by members from Driving Scotland club. The format will be very similar to last years.
Entries are now open for the annual Netherby Classic Car show in August

Saturday 28th January saw a number of Area 19 members travel south to Netherby hall for the belated Christmas night away.
After settling in to our apartments a number of us travelled down to the Pentonbridge Inn to enjoy a few drinks and have a long overdue catch-up.
Everyone met in Netherby at 18.30 for a champagne reception before enjoying an excellent 3 course meal in the lovely dining room.
After dinner entertainment was in the form of a pub quiz which included rounds on Bond, Bond Music and Aston Martin. Well done to team Rodgers Dodgers on their runners up place and to team Vesper on taking the win.
A huge thanks must be passed to Gerald & Margo Smith for hosting us and to the excellent team at Netherby for all their hard work. A special thanks to Kerry and Linda at AMOC HQ for sending up prizes for the quiz and also for the additional champagne for our reception.

Following on from Ian’s report in last months AM Monthly the date for the January overnight meeting has been confirmed as Saturday 28 January. In addition to the rate noted for couples attending there is now a single occupancy rate of £275. If interested, please contact Ian as above.

We may still look to have a monthly meal in December in the West depending on what is available. If so, details will be mailed out.

Ian and I would like to thank all those who have taken part in the Area 19 events throughout 2021, either at Area 19 organised events, or as part of the AMOC display at bigger events. We will be working on the programme for 2022 soon with, hopefully, some new events. Not sure how we can top having the Goldfinger continuation DB5, but we will see. I pre-ordered the sunshine and it duly arrived. 25 members and friends assembled at AV8 Café at Cotswold Airport for breakfast on Thursday 17 August to begin the annual Summer Drive. Under the shadow of the port wing of Negus, the Boeing 747, Gnat, Tornado and V Bomber breakfasts were tucked away before 13 cars took to the road heading southeast to Newbury. Tucked away in an industrial estate is Podium Place, a quite remarkable petrol heads venue, with a Jaguar 220, AM Vantage V12 and assorted other super cars in the café. Tracey, the manager, looked after us well before showing us round the Podium Paddock, the members only facility sporting amongst other things, advanced driving simulators. Fuelled with cake and coffee we headed north over the Valley of the Horse to my house in Upper Rissington. After filling my neighbours’ driveways with Aston Martins, my wife served welcome drinks with a finger buffet in the afternoon sunshine. A great day out with great Area 22 friends.

I can only compare the Area 22 Drive It Day with Vivaldi’s “Four Seasons”. The White Team left Highnam at 1000 in the sunshine. Before 1100 they joined the Blue Team lead by Chris, at Chepstow Racecourse, 25 happy members and friends with 15 Aston Martins basking in Vivaldi’s Spring time. Ten minutes apart the teams left for the Usk and Welsh Valleys beyond. Spring turned to Summer as the cars turned north at Crumlin, passing through Coalbrook Vale and climbing up the famous B4560. Summer was turning Autumn as the skies darkened and the wipers came on, intermittent at first and then continuous. By the time we got to Hay-on-Wye at 1400, it was pouring down… but not enough to deter a “packet of crisps” at the Blue Boar. As we pulled out of the car park and headed east towards Malvern, the weather gods threw everything they could at us but we all arrived together, on time, at the Plough and Harrow at Guarlford. As a bonus we had raised over £250 for NSPCC “Childline”.

In a private dining room we enjoyed “pie and mash” before being addressed by Keith, a senior volunteer at NMA. For almost 90 minutes there was silence in the room as he extolled about many of the memorials and the symbolism behind them. He brought his talk to life through personal stories and anecdotes which were enthralling. As the sun came out we boarded the Land Train for a 40 minute tour of the memorials supported by an excellent commentary. I believe we all left rather over awed by the scale of the NMA and the thought and care which has gone into each and every one of the memorials. A good day out

The meeting in May will be the Area 22 AGM. Don’t despair, we shall find something to laugh about! The AMOC Constitution gives you the opportunity, once a year, to replace your Area Reps. and this will be your chance!
Chris and I look forward to meeting you at the forthcoming events.

Area 22 – The Winter Gathering

On Thursday 15 December we held our flagship event of the year, The Winter Gathering at Burleigh Court. This event had been in the planning stage for six months, dust had been brushed off the evening dress, the ladies had been out shopping. What we had not planned for was Covid. The result was, as many of you are aware, that neither Chris nor I could attend, but the banner was willing picked up by Alan. Despite the night being seasonally cold and the approach road to Burleigh Court being “challenging”, all eventually made it safely. The flood of messages I have received indicate that indeed this event was a fitting end to the Area 22 social year.

Area 22 Calendar for 2023

Ladies and Gentlemen
Today is the launch of the Area 22 Calendar for the coming year. As you will see it contains a range of events in which you may wish to partake. Publishing locations and dates so far ahead is always fraught with danger, but it gives you an overview of the year ahead and what to expect. It is inevitable that there will be some changes as circumstances change .. we just have to roll with the ball! There are further events in the pipeline which are not finalised at this time but will be advised to you as soon as possible.
On the AMOC website under 22 - Gloucestershire - Aston Martin Owners Club (amoc.org) and “Upcoming Events”, you will see a few words about each event. Have a look!
As in 2022, Chris will be managing the Monthly Meetings and I will be managing the “events”. We look forward, with your participation, to a great 2023.

Area 22 November Calendar

As we have only two events planned for the rest of the year, I have decided not to attach the calendar but mention them here.
The November meeting is tomorrow, Thursday, at Fostons Ash where we welcome two new members to Area 22, Georgina and Mathew Streeter.
The last meeting of the year is the Winter Gathering at Burleigh Court on the 15th December. It is now fully booked.
Chris and I are busy finalising the Calendar for 2023 where we have many exciting events already pencilled in. Once they are confirmed we will be circulating the listing.
See you soon …!

South West Areas Show Off

Despite the absolutely appalling weather on Sunday morning, most people managed to get to the Five Zeros Supercar Barn. A rowing boat would have been more appropriate in Bradford-on-Avon. However it turned out to be an excellent venue and event thanks to Doug Alderson (Area 13) and Andrew Fawkes (Area 4). Area 22 was represented by the Denneys and myself, both of us winning raffle prizes and Chris Bates who won nothing! There were some excellent members’ vehicles on display and some which are resident at the Supercar Barn including a Vulcan, yours for a cool 2.5 million! As this was “show off”, it gave Alan and I another opportunity to “show off” our Commonwealth games shirts!!
This was my first visit to this increasingly popular venue and one to which we main return with an Area 22 event.

If you can judge the success of an AMOC monthly meeting by the volume of the chatter in the room, then last night at The Royal Oak was a great success. Good food, good company and 26 members putting the world to rights! Why does the government find it so difficult when we have all the answers?

We are coming to the end of the year and the calendar is looking sparse. The October meeting is at The Royal Oak, Leighterton. If you have not booked, contact Chris at "area22asstrep@amoc.org". The October event is the South West Areas Show Off organised by Areas 4,13 and 18. However I understand it is sold out. Likewise the Winter Gathering at Burleigh Court has sold out early but we may look to an additional event in the New Year. AMOC will have a stand at the Classic Motor Show at the NEC, 11 -13 November. You may like to pop along and say hello!

On Monday 5 September 25 members of Area 22 met at the Holiday Inn, Dumfries for the start of the Glens and Bens Expedition to Scotland. Sprits were high the next day as the White Team and the Blue Team turned an eclectic mix of Aston Martins northwards through the forests of Galloway, crossing the Clyde at Gourock and onwards to Taychreggan on the west shore of Loch Awe, our home for the next three days. In that time we drove some of the finest roads Scotland has to offer through the Glens, and past the Bens, of Argyllshire. We looped to the north on the Road to the Isles and Mallaig, returning through Moidart, one of the forgotten parts of Scotland. We drove to the south as far as Tarbert, Loch Fyne, some returning on the Tarbert to Portavadie ferry which presented a challenge to front splitters. As we returned in the late afternoon we learned of the passing of Her Majesty which had a sobering effect on the evenings proceedings. Our spirits were lifted by the haunting tones of Jamie

Well, I guess that is Summer gone… but Area 22 pushes forward regardless.
September got off to a great start with “Posh Pizza” being enjoyed last night. Report to follow.
The Glens and Bens Expedition gets under way shortly with 13 cars coming out of the Pits ready for the Formation Lap and the Start Line on Monday 5 September. In fact, I understand that some have already got a sneaky start!

Looking ahead, you will see the October meeting is at The Royal Oak @ Leighterton and we return to Fostons Ash in November.
A change to the calendar is replacement of the proposed drive out with the Southwest Area Show Off on Sunday 23 October. Being held at the Five Zeros Supercar Barn, it is organised by Area 4, 13 and 18 and I felt we should support them. You can register on the AMOC website for this event.

The December meeting will be the Winter Gathering @ Burleigh Court . The support for this has been overwhelming and as I write this there are only

Our largest monthly meeting this year was held last night at Burleigh Court Hotel near Stroud. In the sunken garden, members and friends enjoyed “Posh Pizza” whilst listening to James Watson play an eclectic selection of music on his guitar. In the late afternoon it was raining but by 1900 hours it had dried up, the lights were on, the open fires lit and the smell of the pizza oven drifted around the tables. James Rae, supported by his staff, did us proud .. it was unanimously agreed that these are the “best pizzas ever”, the wine and the local beer possibly influencing the decision. Of course, all the problems facing the new Prime Minister next week were quickly identified and solutions offered by Area 22. Last night bodes well for our Winter Gathering on 15 December at the same location.

On a very overcast morning 20 members and friends met up at the Classic Motor Hub, Bibury for the start of the Summer Drive. After coffee and a walk round the showroom, with hands firmly in pockets, we left on part one of the drive to the West Berkshire Brewery at Yattendon. The sun soon came out and we headed south through beautiful scenery which only England in the summer can provide. The brewery, sited on the estate of Baron Iliffe, provides an excellent venue with good food and a big car park! After lunch we were introduced to the benefits of owning an e-bike by John Clark of Velospeed, a local dealer and expert on the topic. We left for what we thought was going to be a relaxing drive to Tytherington .. not so as it turned out. As we approached Castle Coombe we were confronted with “Road Closed” signs across every road we attempted and, as usual, not a workman in sight! Eventually having traversed roads with “grass in the middle” we emerged at The Swan at Tytherington where we enj

When a visit to Highgrove Gardens was mentioned by Rich Burgess, I must admit that “pins and eyes” came into my mind. However, on investigation it turned out I was completely wrong and over 45 people came forward saying “yes, please”! And so on Wednesday July 27, 26 members from Area 22 met at Westonbirt Arboretum prior to braving the security of Highgrove. What a great day we all had. Most people were expecting perfectly manicured lawns, immaculate borders and birds singing loyal songs. Not at all, it was all very natural but thoughtfully laid out which impressed everyone. His Royal Highness was in residence but did not pop out to see us! His DB6 Volante, as it turned out, was in Birmingham for the Commonwealth Games. Lunch was taken at the Royal Oak in Leighterton, just down the road. Thanks to Will Dixon for finding the venue.

In February I received an e-mail through AMOC from “Birmingham Ceremonies” seeking “red, white or blue cars for the Games”. Always up for a challenge I replied with the details of C7SFO and also prompted Alan Denney with his blue DB11 AMR also to be involved. Other than be told we had been accepted, we heard nothing for months until on 12 June we found ourselves at the first of 8 rehearsals with 70 other cars. The early rehearsals were held on the site of the old MG factory at Longbridge, but we soon moved to the Alexandra Stadium at Perry Bar. You now know that the end product was to be a Union Flag formed by 72 cars in 1 minute 40 seconds just before the playing of the National Anthem. It cannot be done was the first reaction… but of course it was, and the picture shows the result. I may do an article for AM Quarterly later in the year.

Sorry to be late with the calendar this month. Just back from holidays and we have a house full of workmen .. not a good combination!
So, this month we meet at The Ragged Cot tomorrow and on 27 July it is the first visit to Highgrove Gardens. Those going should have received details, if not call me. Other events such as the Stow Motor Show are on the calendar.
Going into August we have the Summer Drive on 17 August. I have sent out the details but will do so again nearer the time. The September meeting is a "posh pizza" evening with our own musician. Other important events are of course the AM Heritage Festival and the Silverstone Classic.
Enjoy the Summer!!

On Tuesday June 14 twenty-four members and friends from Area 22 and beyond visited Vaughtons in Birmingham. Established in 1819 they continue to make medals, regalia, and chains of office in gold, silver and other precious metals. Why is this interesting to us? Simply because they also make the badges which define the models of our cars including the “wing” on the bonnet. These guys are jewellers, taking infinite care to get the product perfect. We walked round the factory with the Managing Director, Nick Hobbis and his deputy Paul, to see the multi-stage process for ourselves, one “wing” taking up to twelve manhours to complete. Safe to say, everyone was impressed by the craftsmanship and expertise, not to mention friendliness, displayed by all the staff. Some members tried their hand at making a “wing”, but will probably not display it on their car! Lunch was taken afterwards at the delightful Malt Shovel pub in the picturesque village of Barston.

Here is the June Calendar for Area 22. You will see the monthly meeting on 9 June is at Fostons Ash in “the tent”. On 14 June we have 25 people going to Vaughtons in Birmingham to see the jewellers at work making our badges. You may like to note that the August monthly meeting, scheduled for The Mount at Stanton has had to be changed to The Crown at Frampton Mansell. This is due to staff shortages, a problem I am sure we are all seeing elsewhere. I have advertised the Summer Drive for 17 August. If you can make it this will be a very pleasant event. We left the Severn View Services under heavy rain clouds with a cold westerly wind. It did not bode well for an expedition on Welsh mountain roads. Regardless, we turned up the fast, twisty road towards Usk and, as if by magic, the clouds lifted and the sun came out. With virtually no traffic at all, and in bright sunshine, we made “very good progress” over the EVO test road (B4560) and on to Brecon. Refuelled with coffee and buns, we pushed on up the A470 through Rhayader to enjoy the B4518, Llanidloes to Machynlleth road. What a joy … no traffic at all .. go as fast as you dare (within the law of course)! By 1345 we were parked up in the sunshine on the Aberdyfi seafront. Walkers Fish and Chips were as good as ever! After a walk by the sea, two groups set off home whilst the others spent an excellent evening at the Penhelig Arms Hotel celebrating Chris Bates's birthday.

The Seven Tuns

28 Members and partners enjoyed the May meeting at the Seven Tuns, Chedworth. Despite some concerns about the narrow approach roads and the car parking, as far as I know, there were no problems. For the first time this year we were able to enjoy a drink outside where we welcomed new members Carl and Lisa Hall. Served in our own room upstairs, the food was as good as we have had anywhere and Josh and his staff did a great job. If the level of conversation was anything to go by, it was a good night!!

17 cars and 24 folk set off from Ross Spur Services on a beautiful spring morning to drive into Wales in support of Childline. Apart from Area 22 we had cars from three other AMOC Areas, the Lotus Seven Club and the Porsche Club. We paused for refreshments at Llangurig and it would seem ate the Blue Bell Inn out of supplies. It was warm and sunny as we drove through Devils Bridge and into the Elan Valley. It was nowhere near as busy as we had anticipated and we made good progress stopping for photographs where appropriate. It was here the two groups got strung out and the road closure and diversion in Rhayader and the road works on the A44 did not help. We approached the Three Horseshoes pub at Allenmore in various groupings to find that police had closed all the surrounding roads due to a serious road accident on the A465. A few eventually reached the pub but this effectively marked the end of the trip. We will get to the Three Horseshoes in the Autumn!

The NO SPACE CENTRE, Leicester

We should have known before we started this adventure into Space that all was not going to be well. The booking system to a “ticket only entry” event was not working. Some of us had tickets, others a promise of paying on the door. When we arrived, the 400 place car park was full and the 90 minute queue to get in was mobbed by what appeared to be 5 million children potentially seeking to spread germs. Discretion being the better part of valour we retreated to the Hatton Arms pub where we enjoyed an excellent lunch and a pint. At the end of day, it was a good day… we may journey into Space later in the year.

Well, it may be only the April 10 but we have had four events so far this month!
We began with Simply Aston at Beaulieu to where several members journeyed down a very quiet A34. I hope, like me, they took full advantage of this unique opportunity. Some enjoyed a bacon butty with Area 13 at the Elm Tree. This event was closely followed by Tom’s Pre-War Treasure Hunt from the Classic Car Hub. A really enjoyable event in the sunshine. Then came the monthly meeting organised by Chris at Fostons Ash which was well attended as usual. Yesterday was AMOC Open Day at the Classic Car Hub. This event seemed to have slipped under the net and there were only 12 cars in the car park on a beautiful Saturday morning. Members came from several Areas including the Midlands and Surrey. We were given an excellent tour of the facilities by Area 22 member Nigel Bowen-Easley who is the AM marque specialist at CMH .. thank you Nigel. We saw a very desirable Mille Miglia eligible 1955 DB2/4 for a cool £250K..

Hosted by Andrea and Alan Richell, tasting of six exclusive wines was led by the resident Expert Ned, who guided us through the nuances of what we should be looking for as we “rolled it round the tongue”. For each wine we had to guess its origin and market price. Area 22’s expertise grew bottle by bottle and by number 6 we had it nailed … St George from “somewhere near Bordeaux” … correct said the Expert! On 6 February we were back at Corse Lawn House for Sunday Lunch. There was a packed house of Area 22 members and partners, together with folks whom we welcomed from three other Areas. The occasion was to say thank you to Tom Wood for his time as Area 22 Rep. Of course, Sue was not forgotten, I do not have to remind you of the saying “behind every successful man etc etc..”! In the time that Tom held the position, the Area’s reputation has grown in line with the number of Astons that Tom now has in the garage. The latest edition is “402” who’s full title I am reliably informed by Wadders is 1934 MKII (B4/402/S). Members and friends presented Tom with a unique piece of art based on 402, created of resin backed on carbon fibre. Thanks go to Rich Burgess who led the project, Katy Barnfield the artist and Ecurie Bertelli who supplied the original photograph. We all wish Tom great success in “Pre War” and happy and safe driving in 402.
