Area 10 August 2024 Update

August was another busy month and there is still much to look forward to.

The weather for our annual Tom May Special meeting at Eton Dorney was rather overcast with a rain shower which deterred some people.  But 116 Members and friends did turn up with their Astons to create another great display in front of the boathouse.  The service and the food were the best ever and helped create a great social event.  Last year’s award winners chose their successors for the two Tom May Special awards.  Chris Collins chose Mark & Claire Gower’s Vanquish as “Best Aston” whilst Phil Diggens (unknowingly) chose my V12 Vantage S as “The Aston I would most like to take home”.  The winners and partners received a bottle of Pommery Champagne and a floral display in a basket.  Having produced the displays, Jo Sears passed on her basket to the Eton Dorney staff.

Advance notice - next year’s event will be on 7 August as on the second Thursday they will be hosting a large “para” event.

We had eight Astons in our display at the RAF Benson Families Day – they were much-admired by the attendees.  The windy conditions curtailed some of the flying displays and in particular, the BBMF Lancaster was unable to take off from RAF Coningsby but there was plenty to entertain us. Simply Aston enjoyed perfect weather – much better than the usual April showers.  About 20 Area 10 Astons met up at the M3 Winchester services and departed in two convoys.  The M3 was very busy and I believe half of my group followed a rogue Aston off the M27 at the wrong junction.  The rest of us managed to keep together and in the end about 30 of us were parked up together, with another 10 or so, joining other displays – DB7, AMR, Area 13, … We held our mascot photoshoot at 12 noon – independent judge Debbie Tyler-Curtis from Area 00 selected Ciaran Corrigan’s bear, Louis, as her favourite before we all settled down to our picnics.  The photoshoot result by Martin Mills is now the cover photo for our Area 10 Facebook page.

At fairly short notice, Area 10 Member Mark Finch secured an invite for Area 10 Members to attend the Polo Festival at The Royal County of Berkshire Polo Club.  Eleven Astons accepted the offer of discounted entry fee and reserved parking, and thoroughly enjoyed the event.  James Finch has produced a short video which he has posted on Youtube and you can view here.

This might become an annual event.

I attended all three days of the Silverstone Festival with the weather eventually becoming dry and sunny (but breezy) on the Sunday.  The AMOC marquee was a big step up from recent years with a really smart marquee, excellent refreshments throughout the day, generous Champagne on Sunday, and a great atmosphere.  We had our usual spacious infield location, but a lot of other car clubs appeared to have been displaced by the food tents and were relocated outside the circuit.

Six Astons took up the offer to attend the Auto Fest at the Buckinghamshire Railway Centre on bank holiday Monday.  Whilst other cars were parked across the tracks in an uneven “showground”, the Astons were kindly offered the smooth grassy area by the visitor centre. Two of our Members, Gerry & Sally Whitlow, played in the brass band under the visitor centre canopy. Two engines were in steam for the day and provided rides along the local track
