Area 10 Monthly Report
August 2023

Our monthly meeting at The Bird in Hand had fewer attendees than usual due in part to the Festival of Speed, but Steve Johnson reports that it was an enjoyable evening.

Our visit to the Chiltern Winery was entertaining.  25 Members were given an introduction to the winery and its history after which we were split into two groups to visit the vineyard, the winery and also the brewery.  There followed a generous tasting session of three wines, three beers (including Prince Philip’s favourite Barn Ale), and a liqueur.  Afterwards we went down the hill to Hambledon for dinner in The Stag & Huntsman which apparently features regularly in Midsomer Murders – fortunately we all survived!  Our thanks go to Jane Brill for arranging the event.

The Ladies Lunch was well-attended with 15 ladies dining at The Golden Ball near Henley.  I hear that service was a bit slow but that the food was very good.  Thanks to Linda Davies for again arranging this sociable event.

The Area 10 visit to the Battle Proms at Highclere Castle attracted over 30 Area 10 Members plus a further 18 from Area 1. I am told that it was a very successful event with dry weather, but sadly Jo and I could not attend as she had a lingering positive Covid test which cleared 24 hours too late.

Next Meeting

Our next meeting is on Thursday 10 August and is our annual Eton Dorney Barbecue and Tom May Special.  As I write, I am finalising numbers to pay next week and will start a reserve list from Tuesday 1 August. We have 120+ people coming with their Astons, including a DB12 from Aston Martin Reading which will not be eligible for judging for “The Aston I would most like to take home”!

Other News

Liz Constance’s DB9 is featured in the August edition of Classic & Sportscar Magazine.

Geoff & Carole Dische have told me that they have arranged our Area 10 New Year Dinner to be held on Saturday 13 January (my birthday!) – please save the date.

This month, I would like to welcome Martin Taylor, Neil Manthorpe and Nigel Bennett as new members of AMOC and of Area 10 this month.  I look forward to meeting Nigel at Eton Dorney, and the others at some of our meetings or events before too long.

Whilst talking membership, I should apologise for getting Chris Langley’s name wrong last month and in AM Monthly (he is not Chris Manning).
